The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is the licensing exam conducted by the National Medical Commission (NMC) that allows Indian students who completed MBBS abroad to practice medicine in India. What is FMGE?

FMGE is a screening test with 300 multiple-choice questions covering all major medical subjects. Students must score at least 150 out of 300 to pass. The exam is conducted twice a year — in June and December.

FMGE Pass Rate

Historically, the FMGE pass rate has been around 15–25%. However, students who prepare systematically from Year 1 and choose NMC-recognized universities achieve significantly higher pass rates.

Year-wise FMGE Strategy

Year 1 & 2 — Pre-Clinical Foundation

  • Focus on Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry thoroughly
  • Make notes from the very first lecture
  • Study from standard Indian textbooks: Gray’s Anatomy, Guyton Physiology
  • Revise regularly — do not leave topics for the end

Year 3 & 4 — Para-Clinical Subjects

  • Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine
  • These are high-weightage FMGE subjects
  • Start solving MCQs subject-wise from this year

Year 5 & 6 — Clinical Subjects

  • Medicine, Surgery, OBG, Pediatrics, Psychiatry
  • Clinical posting experience helps greatly
  • Start full-length mock tests 6 months before FMGE
